Reform Immigration For America Blog So What Did I Miss?

So What Did I Miss?

Roundup of trending immigration reform topics you were all chatting about the week of 7/24-7/30.

Last week was a busy one. Many of us were still healing from the hateful language of the RNC and easing into the DNC. A stark opposite, the DNC did a pretty good job of uplifting our communities and bringing a positive light to the current political atmosphere. We’ve seen a good start to the conversation of comprehensive immigration reform, but the next 97 days will tell us how invested politicians are in reform.

  1. Karla Ortiz Brought Everyone to Tears

Becoming one of the shining stars of the DNC, Karla Ortiz spoke about constantly fearing her parents might be deported, but she proved that this fear does not make her any less brave. Her story touched so many hearts and hit close to home for many immigrant families, which is why her story was one of the most talked about on social media last week.

  1. Tim Kaine promises Comprehensive Immigration Reform in Hillary’s 100 Days

Right after the Vice Presidential announcement, Tim Kaine set off on a Spanish language media tour, where he spoke to networks like Univision and Telemundo. In these interviews, he pledged his support for Hillary Clinton’s plans for comprehensive immigration reform in the first 100 days of her term, if elected. We’re all anxiously awaiting more concrete plans for reform, but for now having a presidential candidate make it a verbal priority is a huge change from what we’ve heard this election so far.

  1. Khizr Khan Offers a Pocket Constitution to Trump

Immigrant families were at the top of the DNC list, especially when Khizr Khan denounced Donald Trump and offered him his pocket copy of the U.S. Constitution. Khan’s son was a Muslim-American military hero, whom ultimately sacrificed his life for this country.

  1. The Mass Deportation of Black Immigrants that You Haven’t Heard About

Last month, ICE quietly deported dozens of African immigrants. Many of whom had sought asylum and had gone through the first step of ‘credible fear interviews’. Carl Lipscombe, policy and legal manager at Black Alliance for Just Immigration said, “When we talk about Black Lives Matter, that includes black immigrants and black people worldwide.”

  1. Astrid Silva Speaks at the DNC

An immigrant who traveled as a four-year-old on a tire raft to the U.S. from Mexico with her family, was one of several people who spoke about their immigrant experiences and the importance of reform at the Democratic National Convention. Astrid has been a true leader in the fight to keep families together.
