The following is a statement from Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum, and Chair of Reform Immigration FOR America:

The Reform Immigration FOR America Campaign fully supports enactment of the DREAM Act.  The DREAM Act is a core element of the Campaign’s principles for comprehensive immigration reform, and from the beginning of this Campaign, we’ve called on Senators and Representatives to co-sponsor the DREAM Act and other legislation, like the AgJOBS bill and bills to reunite families, as a demonstration of their support for reform.  The fight for the DREAM Act and comprehensive immigration reform, despite what some have argued, is not a zero sum game. And the Campaign has and will continue to demand that Senator Schumer and the Democratic Leadership in the House and Senate find a path for the DREAM Act and a path for Comprehensive Immigration Reform, this year.

At a time when promising young students face bleak prospects due to their immigration status, immigrant families live in fear of separation, families face longer delays in their dreams to be with their immigrant loved ones, immigrant workers face exploitation and abuse, and Arizona-style laws threaten to undermine basic civil liberties in numerous states across the country, the overriding need is unity, coalition and mutual support.  The Campaign has and will work tirelessly for the DREAM Act and humane solutions to this broken immigration system.

Yesterday, in a meeting with Senator Schumer we discussed several different legislative scenarios, including DREAM. At no time during the meeting with Senator Schumer or at any other time has Reform Immigration FOR America ever called on the U.S. Senate not to act on DREAM. In fact, just the opposite is true. We DO support the DREAM act and this was made crystal clear to Senator Schumer.

In fact, we demand the President and Congress come together to provide a path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in America.  We are ready to throw the full weight of our campaign behind a strategy the President and Congress are committed to winning, whether it is DREAM, AgJOBS or Comprehensive Immigration Reform.  The politics of division must end.  Congress must act.

So the question is Do you support it STAND ALONE that’s what we need to know

  • Saul

Juan, do you support Comprehensive Immigration Reform as a stand alone?

  • Alex

Yes, that is precisely the question. Do you indeed support it as ON ITS OWN? Let’s be honest, only a handful of people in Congress (you can probably count them on one hand) would touch CIR even with a ten foot pole. CIR is not going anywhere when our so-called supporters like Schumer keep yanking our chain. The Senate CIR bill was supposed to be introduced LABOR DAY LAST YEAR! You can’t trust anything Schumer and Graham say. They don’t care about us!

The DREAM Act (and AgJobs) is so much more feasible! RIFA, will you please support the DREAM Act on its own as a down payment for CIR?

  • Jorge

    Juan;
they do support it as a Stand Alone bill, if they are urging for Senators and Representatives to “Co-Sponsor” The Dream Act… How is this hard to understand… Don’t burn bridges, build coalitions =P

  • Ernesto

The question is, do you support the DREAM act as a STAND ALONE bill?
CIR has virtualy no chances of passing this year, but the DREAM act has a 50% chance. Mr Noorani, will you support the DREAM act as a STAND ALONE bill, or will you hold it hostage due to your “all or nothing” strategy, and disrespect the DREAMers who are fasting for justice?

  • Joe Mikus

You want reform? Put your mouth where your mouth is! Pay a fine? How much? Learn English? How fluent and what is the time frame? Pay back taxes? How much and how is it determined? Go to the end of the line? There are more then 10 million people not residing in the US who are “in line” Go to the end of the line, return to your country of origin and wait just as they do.What is the penalty for noncompliance? The facts mam and just the facts!

  • Angel Andraca

That is true! The Dream act must pass this year and the congress must act now!! I fully support the Dream act and CIR

    Joe,
All your questions are valid. However I think you should inform yourself first and you might be able to answer those questions by yourself. First, many of the students who are fighting for the Dream Act where raised in our beautiful country. Therefore, they are proficient in English, and sometimes that’s the only language that they speak. They do pay taxes, I don’t know if you are familiar but most of them have an ITIN numbers where they file their taxes without having to put a SSN. Most of them since they are undocumented do not receive the benefits from paying taxes, but they do it anyways. Also they also consume, they do not go to the store and say “I am not a citizen, please do not charge me taxes.” They also pay taxes that are taken away from their pay checks and when they rent/paying their houses. Not every country has the same criteria that give them a legal status in the US. You have to really inform yourself about that. Also, don’t you think that if the Immigration System wasn’t broken, there would be as many undocumented immigrants? You have to study legislation such as Bracero Program, IRCA, etc. They are the ones that created immigration illegal. Also we are not taking about an amnesty. We are talking about the DREAM ACT! You should take a look at the bill. As a teacher I highly support it! Because it helps young educated and motivated people who want to contribute to my country!

Just a bit of background on myself to begin
    1) U.S. Citizen (jus soli – by birth – both parents AMERICAN)
    2) Black American (NOT AFRICAN; NOR HISPANIC)
    3) Born & Raised in BED-STUY, Brooklyn, NY
    4) Former Law Enforcement Officer (15 years)
    5) Former Immigration Inspector & CBP (Legacy INS)

Now that my background is covered for the benefit of the nay-sayers and opponents, allow me to begin.
Firstly, the U.S. immigration policy is, at best, a logistical nightmare. We are so far behind other countries regarding the lawful presence of individuals it’s not funny. As I am NOT a proponent of another blanket amnesty policy, such as the one former President Reagan approved, I am an advocate of the Dream Act. When the amnesty policy was enacted, we endured a larger migration of undocumented persons. In my belief, it was solely in hopes of yet another amnesty soon to follow. Well, HOPEFULLY, that WILL NOT happen again. I equate the Dream Act with that of the birth of a child. A child has no decision making rights. A child goes and does where/what he/she is told to go/do. As a PROUD father, residing in a city that has MORE than its share of undocumented immigrants free-loading off the tax paying, LEGAL citizens/residents, and depleting the valuable resources that we so desperately need for our legal/documented children, and ourselves if I might add, the following may sound a bit hypocritical. The kids of these law breakers DID NOT ASK TO BE BORN, NOR DID THEY ASK TO BE HERE! The fact of the matter is, THEY ARE HERE, HAVE BEEN HERE FOR THE BETTER PART OF THEIR LIVES AND DESERVE A FAIR CHANCE AT LIFE. WE, as a whole, and I do include myself, may not want to recognize these children, whether they’re still minors or adults, as U.S. citizens, but, THEY ARE! If you’ve noticed, I identified myself as a BLACK AMERICAN. That’s specifically because, if the Native Americans decided to revolt and send US ALL back to where WE DESCENDED, I wouldn’t know a damn thing about Africa; nor do I have a desire to be there. The children of these undocumented individuals, who were not born here, had no choice but to accompany their parents or guardians. The majority of them have no damn clue what their birth country offers, consists of culturally or where it is geographically. Place yourself in their position, specifically at the time of their high school graduation. Most of your other classmates have applied and been accepted to different universities, or, if you’re lucky enough to have attended one of NYC specialized high schools, you may have a job (or at least an internship) ready and waiting for you. What happens to those without a social security card? What are their options? While few have the capabilities of obtaining a college degree without the need of financial aid, many don’t. Growing up in Brooklyn, I have seen these same individuals turn to selling drugs, prostitution or some other illicit means of providing for themselves. After all, they are AMERICANS! Just as we will NOT work for the peanuts some small businesses offer, they won’t either. And rightfully so. Should they marry a U.S. citizen for the sake of staying in the only country they know? I think NOT! Their stories are endless. As AMERICANS, we PROTECT & FIGHT for the freedoms that we hold dear to our hearts. So, why should the children of the ignorant who brought them here pay or suffer for the decision made by someone who either decided NOT TO or that they WOULD NOT do it the LEGAL way? Now, will we possibly have an influx of undocumented persons migrating , should our President & Senate decide to pass the Dream Act and make it law, in hopes of skirting the requirements or the possibility of yet another Dream Act policy being enacted for those who do not presently qualify? Probably. But, I can assure you, it will not be near the influx of those who flooded our borders when former President Reagan ultimately had his amnesty policy passed. NOTHING is perfect! NOTHING! Thanks for reading my HUMBLE opinion.

Reform won’t happen this year. We NEED the DREAM Act. Will you support it as a stand-alone bill? Please do. Pax Christi.
