Jeff's Memory Card 101

Last night, more than 150 people gathered in front of Governor Jan Brewer’s office in Arizona to call for a veto on SB 1070.  The bill, which would mandate racial profiling in a state that has become ground zero of the immigration debate, was passed by the state Senate yesterday by a vote of 17-11.

Take a stand and tell Governor Brewer to veto SB 1070.

The Governor has five days to sign or veto the bill. That means that by Saturday, Arizona may be a police state. Long-time immigrant rights activist Cardinal Roger Mahony had this to say about the anti-immigrant bill:

American people are fair-minded and respectful. I can’t imagine Arizonans now reverting to German Nazi and Russian Communist techniques whereby people are required to turn one another in to the authorities on any suspicion of documentation.

Last night, families peacefully called for justice in their state, holding vigil outside of the Governor’s office. There were even 9 community members who stayed all night, never backing down on their calls for justice.

Eliseo Medina of SEIU joined the vigil-goers and at one point Arizona state Representative Krysten Sinema delivered food to the weary activists.

Representative Sinema opposes the legislation and also hopes the Governor will do the right thing and veto SB 1070:

This bill increases fear, decreases the ability of police to secure communities and does nothing to address the real issues that face our border community. (via FeetIn2Worlds)

Governor Brewer last weekend promised the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce she would “do the right thing” with regard to SB 1070. We are all wondering what the “right thing” is in the Governor’s mind.

We will continue to hold vigil and call for the veto of a bill that enshrines hate into our country’s laws.

Take a stand now and ask Gov. Brewer to veto SB 1070.

Racial profiling? Not on our watch.

YES WE CAN!!! My friends can’t get a driver lic, but they paid their taxes to Uncle SAM every year so they can be deported next day! So American citizens are not willing to pay their part but my undocumented friends are willing to go long! I LOVE AMERICA for that I must stand with anybody that stands right, and stand with him while he is right, and part with him when he goes wrong.

there is nothing in this bill about race its about security. this bill is forced on Arizona because the federal government will not up hold it constitutional duty and secure the boarders. in fact it will not even enforce the laws on the books. so we in Arizona must take action to protect our self from the drug lord and terrorist that are coming across the boarder and destroying our state. So if the Feds will not enforce the law we are forced to do so our self.

my advice to the 420,000 illegal’s in this state is leave know will the getting is good.

  • Tonnywarfare

Yeah! Let’s kill everyone specially those who look brown and are working on my yard! Oh wait cheap labor! Don’t matters, but one thing cross my mind! Those who work for drug dealers carry semi-automatic and automatic weapons (made in the USA) and I don’t think they will clean my yard or do the maid service!

I understand that the law is enforcing police officers to check undocumented people because many of these people are making wrong decisions here and doing things illegally. But what happens to the those who have been raised here and have kids here and have no bad record and have never committed a crime? families will be seperated, there will be no remorse, there will be heartbreaks, fear, and chaos. why cant those who are here on a good note, cant have a second chance?? there are many undocumented people who want to make america a better place n love this country. we got to think about the good and the bad people. SB 1070 needs to be vetoed! The Governor needs to find a better way to make things right. sb 1070 is a racist and unfair law!

  • Jorge

Who the hell got here first?
No one in this country are Native Americans, all somehow got immigrate here from different parts of the word , so who are all these freaking ignorants have to pass a bill to get the police to stop people to ask for immigration papers, so how they would know who is or not citizens? that is against every one who is not WHITE. So I think this Governor is making a huge mistake.

  • Diego

I am against anything illegal, including illegal immigrants. However, this law is unconstitutional. People are free and innocent until proven guilty. This new law will make any non-caucasian person subject to be detained JUST BECAUSE they are not caucasian, whether they are Americans, or are in the US legal or illegally. I’m sorry Arizona lawmakers, that is nothing but racism, and violates the American Constitution. Arrest, send to jail, and even deport anyone committing crimes, that’s understandable, but do not make LOOKS/RACE a crime and reason for detention, even if this is a short term detention while checking if the detainee is in the US legally or illegally. Now, on another note, those saying that immigrants are terrorits really need to learn a bit about life!

  • JoeW

Mr. Obama said the Arizona bill threatens “to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and our communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe.”

Umm, 1st the gov needs to gain the trust of law abiding citizens by enforcing laws against law breakers. After that, the police can work on gaining the trust of criminals… Is Obama REALLY this stupid or does he just pretend?

  • Miri

GOVERNMENT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THIS WAY. THEY MAKE A HUGE MISTAKE, AFFECTING THOUSANDS, THEN DECADES LATER THEY TRY TO MEND IT BY SAYING THEY’RE “VERY SORRY.” HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF, BUT SADLY, THEY NEVER LEARN. LA IGNORANCIA E HIPOCRESIA QUE EXISTE EN ESTOS TIEMPOS ES REALMENTE SORPRENDENTE. HOW ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO TELL A PERSON IS ILLEGAL? DO THEY CARRY SOME KIND OF MARK OR WHAT? THIS IS RACIAL PROFILING…PERIOS. THE GOVERNOR CAN MAKE IT SOUND HOWEVER SHE WANTS, BUT THE TRUTH IS SIMPLE. THE CIVIL RIGHTS OF THOUSANDS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE ARE IN JEOPARDY. SAY NO TO SB 1070!!!

  • Sarah

Already I have seen and heard violent racial outburst by neighbors in confrontation one Anglo and thinking he has the right know to ask if an African American is legal and has documents threatening him to call authority for no apparent reason. On the same day saw a man in our neighborhood waving a NAZI flag yelling at an underage African American boy! Does this seem right to people? Does this seem Moral or Religious in any kind of way from what this Country is founded on? This is crazy! This is an embarrassment to our State and Country! We should be very ashamed as Americans!

    so immigrants..?
immigrants are the people who make this country,
everyone in america has migrated someway, except the native indians,
whose land was taken away, like they did to us,Mexico.
but even though they took our land,we have been getting it back, step by step USA is becoming a country dominated by hispanics and immigrants. I do not understand what is the point of this bill, it is only creating violence and violating the human right. instead of asking who is illegal and who is not, why dont they ask what child is hungry and which one needs love? there are many things out there that are not being taken care of. Please stop this. We are humans not aliens, we are here to work, we are the ones who make your hamburgers and plant your trees, do you want to do it?
420,000 illegal people in Arizona wow, poor Arizona if they leave, we come here for a better life,we work, buy ourselves a car, we rent a house, wait! we rent a house, we are giving ,money, we are helping the economy! we have always heped the economy, and we are the biggest community that has helped the united states grow. Please think about this, Y TENEMOS QUE LUCHAR POR UNA REFORMA MIGRATORIA! SI SE PUEDE MI GENTE!

Monica, I had so much to say until i read your comment!!!!
Its nice to know theres alot of people out there w/brains, unlike the president and the Governor who think they know how to make America a better place by passing this law??? And for all those who think this is a good law, how sorry I feel for you, You dont realize how this will affect you too??? Just like the comments above, HELLO immigrants pay bills to, rent, food, entertainment, these ppl have cars..who need gas, insurance etc…they are buidling up the ecnonomy, and it doesn’t take a genius to realize that!!! Just a moron not to see! ohhhhh and btw…this ain’t over…we will fight to veto this law, just watch….
