On January 1st, four immigrant students left Miami, Florida for a four month-long journey to Washington, DC – on foot. These brave students are walking the “Trail of Dreams” in order to unite support for just and humane immigration reform and highlight the urgent need for change.
Carlos, Gaby, Felipe and Juan are documenting their journey and telling their stories as they march towards Washington and towards the hope of an immigration system that keeps families together and grants them the right to full citizenship in the country they consider home.
Yesterday, one of the marchers took to the Trail of Dreams blog and penned this inspiring message:
Along the way we are going to encounter hardships, however, we know that if we keep ourselves positive we will achieve anything. This is a walk of faith, many have put so much on the line because we KNOW what we are doing will create ripples of effect that will impact people through out the globe. Newspapers around the world are writing about this and people are sending us messages from Europe saying they are going to walk with to the US Embassy in solidarity.
So as we collect people’s dreams in our daily walk, we ask you, what work are you willing to do to ensure that the faith you have is not dead? How are you going to make your dreams a reality?
While these four passionate activists are walking for justice, back in Homestead, Florida another group of community members and families will be fasting in solidarity. The “Fast for Our Families” are on an indefinite fast:
…in the name of all who have lost a loved one to the deportation system. The purpose of this fast is to touch the hearts and minds of all who value family unity and the strength of our communities. President Obama, we can’t wait anymore!

Illegal immigransts are usually here to find work that they cannot find at home. Why not jail those that knowingly hire ill-legal immigrants, instead of American workers? I would bet that this would drop illegal immigration precipitously. I know that it is far easier to blame the poor than the rich in this case, but are HR people so stupid not to know that many of their hirees are illegal? In a recent case in Illinois, over 1/3 of the meat-packers were illegal!!! Maybe the HR people should be sent back to their countries of origin for incompetance!
There are so many american students that cannot go to college because they cant afford it.Maybe if america did not send billion dollars or more to help mexico, plus the billions that are spent on illegals every year,,we could send our citizens to college!Understand this, yet you call us racist and attack our police and deface government buildings ,,,You should be ashamed of yourselves !
To Felipe Matos:
I am brazilian. I grew up in Brazil, I went to university in Brazil, my family is a hard work family and I am very happy and proud of our country now. Brazil is taking off, it’s one of biggest economy in the world, our country is doing well now… and why do you wanna go to university in the U.S.? Sao Paulo University in Brazil is one of the best universities in the world. Felipe, Brazil needs young people like you who wants to study and grow. Our economic situation is great and you want to stay in a country where the economy is going bad. This is really very stupid.

ES MEJOR MORIR PARADO QUE VIVIR ARRODILLADO !!!!!!
I’m just another immigrant in this living in this country undocumented and I believe we illegal immigrants have hope towards the future. I greatly appreciate that you are taking the message to Washington and spreading the word that we are humans and we need to be treated as such.
Eighteen years ago, my parents and I immigrated here to the United States from the Philippines. My parents took the appropriate steps to become legal residents of the United States and even went the extra mile to obtain citizenship. Although it was a lot of paperwork and bureaucracy, my parents wanted to do the right thing and follow the laws of the land they began to call home.
If you all have been here for years and call this place home, why not become legal? What have you been doing all these years? It’s not fair for you to be enjoying the privileges of American life without having to pay taxes or partake in the other responsibilities that come with such privileges. One such privilege is the ability to not “live in constant fear” that you say you constantly experience as well as the opportunity to “give back to the educational community” as you say you so long to do.
Do the right thing. Set an example for other people that are illegal. Just because you are here and you went to school doesn’t give you the right to begin changing up the laws because you don’t want to take the efforts and appropriate steps to become legal like my parents had to endure. I think your effort is well-placed, but it seems to be just a cop-out.
Please, we need to do something. I have kids in my classes who have lived here all their lives and are becoming anti-American because they are realizing they are not wanted. Not only do many of them face poverty, have no insurance, and have little support, they now realize they are not even wanted in the only country they have ever known. Their parents work hard at laboring jobs and pay taxes every time they purchase anything at the grocery store or petro station. It is not right. We need to move and we need to move fast for an amnesty program. Sharon Davis, San Antonio, Texas
I am a 62 year old grandmother, who was born & reared in the Rio Grande Valley–near Brownsville TX. Just out of college, I taught migrant students in the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD. I also worked with Head Start in Edinburg (Hidalgo County). When I hear or read negative reactions to granting amnesty, I always wonder, “What has been the experience of the individual, who is pushing back against reform?” I have lived in Texas all but five years of my life. Texas is among the top five states in the nation with illegal immigrants. I do not understand this fear of immigrants. My ancestors were immigrants & so were yours—those of you who are angry about the possibility of reform. The vast—let me reiterate, VAST—majority of illegal immigrants are law-abiding, hard-working & very patriotic individuals, who deserve to be provided a path toward citizenship.
Send all the illegal immigrants home. This is NOT a “civil rights issue.” It’s a legal issue and they are all breaking the law. I don’t care how long they’ve been here. The longer illegal, the worse the case.
Yes I support all of you. You have gone on the right path. Immigration reform has to get attention in the whitehouse. A lot of capable students get stranded after graduation and its not even their fault.
Obama you must do something, we have dreams and don’t separate our families. My family is a hard working family, my parents and also my brother work , we only came here for a better life and education. Thanks walkers and GOD BLESS YOU ALL!
The few illegal students that do get accepted into college DESERVE the right to be given this admisty. It is ridiculuous that they can’t have the same opportunities!!! Especially because if they came here so young then how can you expect them to go back to their country when this becomes their country. This by the way, does not only include hispanic students there are also asian, african, etc “illegal” students that maybe even came here as babies with their parents and are now 20 but cannot afford school at out-of-state tuition. We need some balance with our opinions. Respect both sides and find a healthy answer to this problem. We will only find it if we meet right in the middle. My faith goes out to you four. Next time, I hope we see a bigger number of legal/illegal students for this walking together!!!
We must be cautious with our words. We must be mindful that people have concerns why they do not want immigrants in this country. I am a student at USF trying to garnish support for the DREAM act but I must listen to every word and every thought that somebody has against the DREAM act. It is easy to gain the support
from those who are for it but the challenge is to gain those who are against it.
I can’t believe that some of these american people so ignorant and stupid, they talking about immigrants go h
ome, but if immigrants should go home where will the government get money from to mind these lazy americans, is our tax paying dollars have them eating and drinking, so some of them need to shut up.
I am so proud of how strong all of you are. I will be following your walk now to its end, and support your cause wholeheartedly!
Be well.
I will support them as much as I can!!!
I know how hard is to be an illegal immigrant. I was only ten years old when I came to the U.S.A. Now I am almost out out of High School, I am one of the best students on the school but with out legal documentations I can not do anything. I want to became an airliner pilot; however, now it is just a dream as I can not go to any flight school.
I hope soon the immigration reform will pass. That will make me so happy!!
People need to understand the Dream act does not only affect hispanics/latinos. When people use the term undocumented we suddenly think mexican but there are so many other people who come into this country undocumented. This affects so many communities and gives people an opportunity to succeed.
I Hope this immigration reform passes through because i support all hispanics that are just trying to better their lives and do no harm to anyone.
People need to understand and have an open mind about immigration. This country is based on immigrants. Understand that people are going after a better future for their families and have gone through many hardships to come to this country and still are going through many hard times without a driver’s license or a social security number to work and feed their family. We are all humans and have the same needs and wants no matter what. The negativity that people have towards immigration is absurd. I just hope that you or your family never ever have to go through anything like that, keep in mind that the world goes around and you don’t know where you or your generation will be tomorrow. You don’t know how hard it is to want to get an education and better yourself and not being able to do it because of a paper; it is very frustrating but I still have faith and believe that things will get better.
If you are here illegaly I think you should be sent back when caught or hunted down. If you are here illegaly you have broken the law and you are a criminal and you should be treated as one and sent back from where you came from. There are enough problems here in our country to have to put up with criminals that have permeated our borders and take many jobs away from legal American Citizens. The drugs and gang members that you have brought don’t belong here. Illegals, GO HOME youare not wanted here.
Dios los bendiga y los cuide en su proposito y recuerden hay que estar unidos

Immigrants students are waiting for this, I hope this year we can make it.
my brother is in high school he’s one of the best students of the school he wants to graduate be an engineer but he’s an illegal immigrant student and he can’t go to college, all the teacher in school talk about how smart and good student he is, but he can’t do anything just wait… that someday a reform for all the innocent students that are brought by their parents to the usa can be here legal and be free like everyone else, everybody has a dream.
God Bless America.
oops! fixed.
January 1st – May 1st is four months
I want to say ,thank you walkers so much. I have been praying and praying to God that this reform act gets passed and all the immigrants that are already here get to stay.I am a student and know of younger students coming up who had no involvement of how they entered the country including me. But we are here by the Grace of God, and dont want to be sent back because this is all we know AMERICA! this is our way of life , which we have known for years PLEASE PRESIDENT OBAMA AND CONGRESS GRANT THE YOUTH IMMGRANTS AND ALL THIS REFORM ACT, THE DREAM ACT ! THIS IS OUR YEAR BY THE GRACE OF GOD! give it to us. THANK YOU AGAIN WALKERS FOR TAKING A STAND GOD BLESS YOU ALL!
This is surely great to see, i have met one of the walkers and certainly the ambition found in these your dreamers should inspire all immigrants to get up and be even stronger than we were in past years when CIR was fighting at its best! Now is time to be fighting even better!
