President Obama will give his second State of the Union address in front of Congress tonight. It’s hard to believe a full year has gone by since his first SOTU address: where he only spared 37 words for the immigration issue he had so enthusiastically campaigned on.
“We should continue the work of fixing our broken immigration system to secure our borders, enforce our laws and ensure that everyone who plays by the rules can contribute to our economy and enrich our nation.”
I remember the fierce determination of our movement after that moment: we brought over 300,000 people to march on the Capitol, over half a million of us marched on May 1st and we got the DREAM Act passed in the House. But Congress still hasn’t passed the comprehensive immigration reform we need.
With a GOP-controlled House considered ever-heavier enforcement measures and states considering dozens of Arizona-style laws, what do you want to hear from our Commander in Chief? Tell us in the comments section below.
Frank Sharry, at America’s Voice has a few ideas about what the President should say:
President Obama should challenge Republicans such as Arizona Sens. John McCain and John Kyl to work with him on immigration reform. Immigration has become the defining issue for Latinos, a fast-growing group of voters who are pivotal in swing states such as Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Florida. Action on the DREAM Act in late 2010 put Republicans on the defensive and generated a wave of Latino support that helped Democrats hold onto the Senate. Obama, having failed to keep his promise to fight for comprehensive immigration reform early in his presidency, needs more than a drive-by mention near the end of the speech.
Republicans, still in the grip of the party’s hard-liners and probably needing 40 percent of the Hispanic vote to retake the White House, are vulnerable on this issue. Obama should call for either: (A) an approach that combines the “border security first” stance of many Republicans, with triggers to a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants that most Democrats support; or (B) enactment of a suitable version of the DREAM Act. This will produce a long-overdue bipartisan breakthrough on immigration, or make the issue one that can be used against the GOP in 2012.
I personally would like to hear the President directly link the economy and jobs – undoubtedly the focus of Congress at the moment – to the immigration issue. To be specific, comprehensive immigration reform would boost our economy. And the local enforcement measures that are cropping up in the absence of reform are wrecking state economies.
