SOTU_09

President Obama will give his second State of the Union address in front of Congress tonight. It’s hard to believe a full year has gone by since his first SOTU address: where he only spared 37 words for the immigration issue he had so enthusiastically campaigned on.

“We should continue the work of fixing our broken immigration system to secure our borders, enforce our laws and ensure that everyone who plays by the rules can contribute to our economy and enrich our nation.”

I remember the fierce determination of our movement after that moment: we brought over 300,000 people to march on the Capitol, over half a million of us marched on May 1st and we got the DREAM Act passed in the House. But Congress still hasn’t passed the comprehensive immigration reform we need.

With a GOP-controlled House considered ever-heavier enforcement measures and states considering dozens of Arizona-style laws, what do you want to hear from our Commander in Chief? Tell us in the comments section below.

Frank Sharry, at America’s Voice has a few ideas about what the President should say:

President Obama should challenge Republicans such as Arizona Sens. John McCain and John Kyl to work with him on immigration reform. Immigration has become the defining issue for Latinos, a fast-growing group of voters who are pivotal in swing states such as Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Florida. Action on the DREAM Act in late 2010 put Republicans on the defensive and generated a wave of Latino support that helped Democrats hold onto the Senate. Obama, having failed to keep his promise to fight for comprehensive immigration reform early in his presidency, needs more than a drive-by mention near the end of the speech.
Republicans, still in the grip of the party’s hard-liners and probably needing 40 percent of the Hispanic vote to retake the White House, are vulnerable on this issue. Obama should call for either: (A) an approach that combines the “border security first” stance of many Republicans, with triggers to a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants that most Democrats support; or (B) enactment of a suitable version of the DREAM Act. This will produce a long-overdue bipartisan breakthrough on immigration, or make the issue one that can be used against the GOP in 2012.

I personally would like to hear the President directly link the economy and jobs – undoubtedly the focus of Congress at the moment –  to the immigration issue. To be specific, comprehensive immigration reform would boost our economy. And the local enforcement measures that are cropping up in the absence of reform are wrecking state economies.

So what do you think the President should say? What are you hoping to hear? Leave your ideas in the comments section.

I want to hear Obama say (but have absolutely no faith that he will do so):

    1. We’re puling all troops out of Afghanistan and sending in small-scale aid and school projects ONLY WHEN THE LOCAL POPULACE REQUESTS ONE.

    2. We’re closing Guantanamo, Bagram, and all other secret prisons, immediately ending all renditions and the use of torture, and offering compensation and resettlement to the hundreds of men we have unjustly imprisoned and held without charges in contravention of our own and international laws.

    3. He’s pushing not only the DISCLOSE Act but also a constitutional amendment to make clear that corporations are not persons and do not have the same rights to “free speech” as individuals.

    4. He’s setting up a massive government program to repair our crumbling infrastructure and build green energy projects, and so create hundreds of thousands of jobs.

    5. He is beginning the process of finding legal ways to limit the size of corporations (as Jefferson tried to do 220 years ago) so that there can never again be an entity that is “too big to fail” and which can thus hold the country hostage the way the banks have done the past three years.

    6. He will be using his bully pulpit to try to convince the American people that the highest-paid should make no more than 500% what the average worker makes, rather than the current 5,000%.

    7. That he will fight for higher taxes on the very wealthy (if not back to 1950 levels, then at least to those from the 70’s) and lower taxes on the poor.

    8. That he will do all he can to extend, not merely defend, health care until we have a truly single-payer system.

    9. That he will fight to cut the military budget in half, and use half of those savings to make our school system work again.

    10. That he will use his considerable rhetorical skills to make the US public understand their own interests and encourage us to fight for them.

NOT A CHANCE. I AM WILLING TO BET A LARGE SUM THAT HE DOES NONE OF THESE THINGS.

  • kace

I want to hear he will get CIR done!!!!!!!!!!!! not he wil try, not 10 words in the middle of a speech, like a cookie to us so we keep supposting him. I want a commiment from his part. CIR this year. legalization to help build the conomy is the way to go

  • http://imimgration tunji

i mean to say if this president does not talking about our broken imimgration system tonight with a passion i will definitely going to turn off my tv because you cant keep on trust all this politicians they dont care about the people status or feelings they are only care about them selfs

  • JCEmpire

What I would like to hear is that he is going to work with both parties together in order to do a reform on immigration. But the reform has to be very just. Only to give residency and paper to the people that really work hard, pay taxes, wants that their sons and dougthers achive a degree in the fields that Unites States need most, to raise its economy. No criminals, drugdealers, or people that will relay on the system when they get the legal status taking free benefits and don’t want to work.

  • Guillermo

We want action not just words on an Inmigration Reform. We want to work with american people not against them. Just give us a change to work together.

  • Danny

I want the President to stop telling illegal immigrants and their advocates what they want to hear!
I want him to tell them that a path to citizenship and a Green Card at this point is impossible!
I want him to tell them that he will get together with Republicans and Democrats to get legislation thru Congress that grants illegal aliens a work permit, so they can pay taxes( assuming they aren`t doing it already)get a driver`s license, pay for car insurance and fly back and forth to their countries of origin after paying a fine ($500?)
Knowing that in the future as the economy gets better and we have hard numbers to prove that this folks really pay a lot in taxes, that they create direct and indirect jobs and that we need them to get Green cards then, not now I will be very happy indeed!!

  • Enrique

Mr President we need you to keep your promise of fixing the broken immigration system that is failing millions of families in this country. Fix it NOW!

  • Augusto

  • Augusto

What date is he going to STOP the DEPORTATION of workers?
He said he only aprove the deportation of criminals if this is true ,please , STOP THE DEPORTATION OF WORKERS.

  • Dan

The Republicans have “put their foot down” by insisting on border security prior to meaningful reform, a bar that is very vague and can be easily moved. Our President needs to be just as forceful, and sign TPS for all immigrants pending comprehensive reform. He needs to end all deportations until the Republicans are willing to sit down at the table and find neutral ground on this issue. Republicans claim to be the party for family values, yet they continue to insist on tearing apart multiple families every day. Mr. Obama can end this until meaningful reform takes place.

  • Donald Bahlinger, SJ

mr. obama it is disheartening that this great country of immigrants and of liberty and democracy has not modernized its immigration laws to make them humaine respectful of human rights promoting the good of all human kind. please get congress to move on it.

  • Daniel

We need him to say he’s determined to fix the immigration problem (like Arizona and other states demand). Give Congress one year to act or do it himself if they fail. He could give TPS protection to those who are waiting for an immigration reform until it’s done, issue pardons, reopen the 245(i), etc. We have been waiting for the Congress for way too long, if they don’t deliver, other solutions need to be found on this issue.

  • Parshuram

Fix the employment based immigration by bringing visa recapture bill. There are people waiting for more than 10 years to get immigrated legally, no one talks about them. These people are paying taxes for so many years and spending lot of money to keep their legal status. Please consider these folks first when fixing the complete immigration. Everyone talked about DREAM and other bills but this relatively small community which is trying to immigrate legally being pushed back by legal processes and visa caps.

  • Robert Kuczynski

We need the President to tell the country he is finally going to do what he said and fix the Immigration problem as promised. All the Immigrants are killing our economy by taking our jobs and sending all their money home then getting full benefits from the Government to make up for it. We need to force the Immigrants to learn English BEFORE they can get a “Green Card”. Pass a law like they have in the Bahamas where our citizens are entitled to jobs before Immigrants. This way money will stay in our economy and not be hemorrhaged out of our country into other economies. We have too many Americans that are out of work and even worse, homeless because of Immigrants taking our jobs and leaving us to pay the price. The government also needs tax the hell out of all the companies that “outsource” jobs to other countries!!
If he did this then he would finally be starting to do what the people actually need done to begin to bring this country out of the depression it is in. He needs to do a lot more but this would be a good start to making things right for the American people!!!

  • Mocha6

I don’t really know how things work in congress and all BUT why can’t things happen with immigration reform bills? Why is there bills just sitting there and nothing is being done about getting it passed or voted on? Why is there not many many more immigration reform bills being presented to congress? We need something done and fast. Things are just going to get worst, and the problem won’t be solved by doing nothing or leaving it up to every state to have a law on this matter. That would be way more money out the window then to just have one immigration reform for the whole country. People let’s work together and work for the American people. Things can happen. Something like the 245i would work great. People would have to apply for something be approved and have a the fine to pay. What ever it is, something needs to happen and it can also bring lots of money to the country. Its time for us to fight harded and show that we wont give in. Lets ask for a vote on immigration reform and soon.

I want President Obama to fix the broken immigration system.

What he said is what we all know already. Now, like before we want actions…..make it happen. He can make it happen. So, now once again its time to ask him to act and act now. Good people, that do the right things are being taken apart from families and welling to pay and do whatever it takes to become legal. It’s time for a path way for all those good people. People that want, act and dreams of being apart and called an American. Let’s work together to make 2011, the year of hope and dreams come true.
