Last week, actress Salma Hayek spoke out against the controversial Arizona immigration law, SB 1070. When questioned about her take on the law, Salma had this to say:
“What surprises me is the lack of humanity with which they are treating the immigrants,” she said. “What I can’t understand is how the United States, which is considered a hero around the world that helps other countries, doesn’t help the foreigners who enter their country. It’s a contradiction.” (via tiempo.hn)
Salma is no stranger to immigration controversy. She spoke out against a 2006 law that would have made being in the United States without proper documents a felony.
“As a human being, I find this situation intolerable,” Hayek told the New York Daily News. “As an immigrant, I find it offensive. And as an American citizen, I find it disheartening.” (via latina.com)
Originally from Mexico, Hayek is a naturalized American citizen and can speak to the immigrant experience in the United States.
Gracias, Salma, for standing up for what’s right and using your celebrity platform for good.
