Racial Profiling in Connecticut Mocked by Mayor

Just 24 hours ago, four East Haven, CT, police officers were arrested by the FBI. The FBI found through a 3 year investigation that these police officers were assaulting undocumented immigrants and making up false reports against Hispanics.

From CBS News:

The East Haven officers assaulted individuals while they were handcuffed, unlawfully searched Latino businesses, and harassed and intimidated individuals, including advocates, witnesses and other officers who tried to investigate or report misconduct or abuse the officers committed, according to the federal indictment.

These continual and deliberate patterns of racial profiling did not go unnoticed by the FBI. The federal investigation found “life was made miserable for Hispanics” by these officers in East Haven.

East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo immediately came out in support of the police department. Then, on a radio show later yesterday afternoon, the Mayor was asked what he is going to do to help the Latino community in wake of this disgusting racial profiling tragedy. His response:

“I might have tacos when I go home, I’m not quite sure yet.”

Let’s show him we won’t stand for racial profiling and public displays of ignorance by our elected officials. Text TACO to 69866 to send a taco to Mayor Maturo’s office this week.

    You know everyone of those ethnic groups also had undocumented imagrents, and if its only isolated.rasism make no mistake its not just profiling its rasism and hate then maybe your sweet little town doesnt have a problem educate youself learn a new language then maybe you will have a easier timee dealing with those ppl that have every right to enjoy this country as you .what makes you so special you wher born here and never had to deal with the type of hate ppl who are trying to survive in a new land find a job home way around so the can live learn english and then when they are speaking to someone in the one of two languages they now know they can hear ppl like you say hateful things I would rather only know spanish so I couldnt understand ppl lile you I bet you have yelled learn the language to someone in your town your post proves the hate is isolatef

    Nice to see that fate has finally caught up to Gallo, his feelings about minorities have been in question ever since he was a member of the new haven police dept. He has always been a bigot in uniform. Coming to east haven has only allowed him to spread his wings amongst many in that town who share his sentiments.

    I have a son in east haven schools, and the spanish kids are treated no better or worse than anyone infact the ones in my son schools are gang members transfered in from new haven to seperste them from their peirs. so stop feeling sorry for yourself. How would an american kid be treated where your from. He’d have to speak spanish and Im sure he would be rediculed Get and education your people are over running the borders ILLEGALLY you should not qualify for any tax supported programs

    I am from East haven ct. Besides the fact that that mayor was voted in recently, his remarks are just the kind of personality he has , he is smug to say the least. He only won by 20 votes. But, the profiling situation is not as agressive the media portrayed it it is isolated and does not reflect the feelings of all people in town. I think you as activists are jumping on any bandwagon to get whatever you can at any cost. I happen to like people from latin backgrounds, But I think it is important to respect the language of the country you move to. I am in south florida and even though this is the United States it seems down here especially towRDS MIAMI THAT OUR OWN NATIONAL LANGUAGE IS SECOND AND THAT IS ONLY OUT OF DISRESPECT AND LACK OF EDUCATION. I GIVE ALL (HISPANICS) WHO learn english and communicate equally and try to achieve citizenship legally like most ethinic groups in the past have i.e german,italian,french,spanish,greek,russian,lithuanian,african,asian etc have. What makes you so different or special. Its UNLAWFUL….

    If the adults are bullying the hispanic residents of East Haven, one could only imagine what the hispanic children are going through in their own school system.
    What if anything is being done to protect the silent victims of East Haven? If the adults are scared to speak out the kids definitely won’t.
