Resisting pressure from fans to boycott her recent concert in Phoenix, Arizona, Lady Gaga took to the stage Sunday night with a message for Governor Jan Brewer and supporters of Arizona’s racial profiling law — “I’ll tell you what we have to do about SB-1070. We have to be active. We have to actively protest. … I will not cancel my show. I will yell and I will scream louder. And I will hold you, and we will hold each other, and we will peaceably protest this state. Because if it wasn’t for all of you immigrants, this country wouldn’t have [expletive].”
Opposing SB 1070 is not Lady Gaga’s first foray into the political arena – her stances on gay rights and marriage have made headlines before. She now joins artists such as Shakira, Kanye West, Rage Against the Machine, Yeasayer, Maroon 5 and Sonic Youth in speaking out against SB1070.
Gaga also recounted her experience meeting a young boy whose family was torn apart by deportations for the sold out crowd. “I met a boy today who is suffering… He told me his house was raided because of a parking ticket or something… They took his brother, and now he is in Mexico … It’s really (unfair), and it’s really disgusting. I think it’s important that people understand that it’s a state of emergency for this place and this state,”
