The Border Patrol likes to say that a secure border is a safe border. To that end over 200 miles of new fencing and vehicle barriers and over 3,300 Border Patrol agents have been installed in the Tucson Sector of the Arizona/Mexico border.
But is anyone safer for it?
The Arizona Daily Star is reporting that 2009 was one of the deadliest years ever for people attempting to cross the border. 2009 saw 88 deaths per every 100,000 apprehended crossing the border, compared to 57 per 100,000 in 2008.
Are Border Patrol’s efforts to blame? Some say that the increased presence of agents and new fencing is pushing desperate people into more hazardous routes across the border, or to much longer journeys than expected. Border Patrol’s own rescue operation, Borstar, rescued close to 600 people in the Tuscon Sector in 2009.
This underscores the need for Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform as soon as possible. A humane and just immigration system would not force people to cross hazardous territory to be reunited with their families or to come in search of a better life.
You can urge your elected officials to pass comprehensive immigration reform here and help make sure that people aren’t dying senselessly for failed policies.
