Organizers react to the judge's decision on the Arizona law.
It was just announced that a judge in Arizona has blocked parts of Arizona’s racial profiling law from going into effect until the full case is heard.
The injunction prevents Arizona from asking people’s status — the “reasonable suspicion” portion that meant everything from what shoes you wore to a sixth sense, depending which Republican congressman you asked. It also struck down the part of the law that made it a crime not to carry papers showing your status at all times.
This is a big victory in the fight against injustice, but it’s just the first step.
This is a preliminary injunction – there is still a long fight ahead to make sure this win stands. And, at the end of the day the only way to assure that something like this never happens again is to make our voices are heard (both in the streets and at the polls).
What does that mean? We are still standing up tomorrow, both to celebrate this decision and to be sure justice continues to win.
