Last week at the Netroots Nation conference in Las Vegas, a group of activists delivered over 20,000 petitions asking Congress to pass the DREAM Act to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s staff. 13,000 of those signatures came from the action you took last week, telling Congress to pass the DREAM Act as a step toward comprehensive immigration reform. After the petition delivery, we met with several of Reid’s staff for a discussion.

At the meeting, several activists shared with Reid’s staff the work they’ve been doing, and laid out all the actions they’ve taken — including getting arrested and risking deportation — to raise awareness and push Congress to move on the DREAM Act. They explained that the pressures and the dangers they live with every day. The staffers listened to what we had to say, and said that they want to continue the conversation.

It’s too important an issue to let the discussion end with this petition delivery. The meeting with Reid’s staff was another step on the road to get the DREAM Act the support it needs.
